Using the Five College Catalog to Locate Theses

How to Find School for Social Work Theses

Use to basic Discover Advance Search to Find Theses

Enter the following keywords connected by the word "and":

  • smith
  • social work
  • thesis
  • [your topic]

See examples below.

You can also search by author or title if known.

  • Then Select Limits:
    • Format=Theses
    • Location=SC Neilson Library

Search Tips

  • Use the truncation symbol * to find variations on a term (plural, etc.).
  • Use connectors - "and" to narrow your search; "or" to expand it.
  • Use quotation marks to search for a phrase, e.g. "managed care".
  • Use parentheses to combine more than 2 search terms.
  • Remember to add smith and social work and thesis to your search string.

Examples

To Search For:  Enter (keyword search):
SSW theses on countertransference countertransference and smith and social work and thesis
on adoption  ("foster care" or adopt*) and smith and social work and thesis
on a particular population or group ("Alaska native" or Eskimo*) and smith and social work and thesis

Modifying Your Search

  • You can modify your search to limit by year of publication or other criteria.
  • For paper theses, note the call number and location, or use Request Item for theses in storage.
  • Masters theses (2007 +) are available online in Smith ScholarWorks.
    • To access ScholarWorks, click on the Five College Catalog link that says Access limited to the Smith College community.
    • In ScholarWorks, most online theses are available by clicking on the Download button near the top of the screen.
    • Restricted theses require a Smith Network username and password when accessing from off campus.

How to Find Honors Projects and Other Theses

Using  Advanced Search in the Five College Library Catalog, you can search by author or title if known.

To find honors projects (2009 to present) or honors theses (prior to 2009), enter the following keywords connected by the word "and":

  • smith college
  • honors
  • [your topic]

Example: smith college and honors and gender

For masters or doctoral theses, enter:

  • smith college
  • thesis
  • [your topic]

For paper theses, note the call number and location, or use Request Item for theses in storage.

Smith College Digital Honors Projects and Theses (2008+) are available online through Smith ScholarWorks, but are restricted requiring a Smith Network username and password.
