Here are some important Bible commentary series.  To find additional commentaries, search the Five College Catalog using the subject term "Bible [name of book] commentaries" (for example, "Bible Job commentaries").

Searching for Scriptural Commentary in ATLA

Search the ATLA Religion Database to find articles on specific chapters and verses in the Bible. For example, to find articles about Genesis 1:1, click on "Scriptures" at the top of the page, and follow the path.

1) Click the "Scriptures" tab.

2) Select the Book and Chapter you want and click "Expand."

3) Then choose the verse.

4) Each article should have at least some commentary or interpretation of your selected verse.

  • You may need to look at several commentaries to find one or more that is appropriate for your research question.
  • You may want to look at commentaries for a whole book or chapter, even if your question is about a specific verse.
  • You may need to use Interlibrary Loan if the Five Colleges do not own a copy of the article or book that you need.  Click on SCLinks to link to the Interlibrary Loan service.
