EAL247: Gender and Sexuality in Japan: Literature, Film, Anime, Manga: Home

Welcome

This libguide is designed to support the students in East Asian Languages & Literatures 247. This course explores how writers have dealt with issues of gender and sexuality from the Heian Period through the modern era. Drawing on literary sources as well as film, anime, and manga, we will analyze how gender and sexuality have been represented over 1,000 years in Japan. Examination of different media and texts from different historical moments illuminates how the notions of gender and sexuality have transformed over time as well as how the intersection of gender and sexuality manifests in these stories. All readings, lecture, discussion, and writing will be in English.
