These step-by-step directions provide the same information on accessing HathiTrust eBooks as in the video above.
First, search for books using the Discover search on the library homepage. If a print book is available and owned by Smith, click on it.
Look at the catalog record section "Physical Descrip.". If the record includes the text "Item Record at HathiTrust", a HathiTrust e-book is available to Smith users, and the print copy is not available. Click on the link.
On the next page, click "Log In" in the upper right corner. Select Smith College as your "Partner Institution", and use your Smith ID and password to log in.
After you have logged in, scroll down on the page to "Viewability", and click on "Temporary Access".
On the next screen, click the words "Check Out".
HathiTrust e-books can only be checked out by one user at a time, and will be returned automatically at the end of the borrowing period. After you're done reading the e-book, you may return it early so someone else can read it by clicking "Return Early".
HathiTrust is a not-for-profit collaborative of academic and research libraries preserving 17+ million digitized items. HathiTrust offers reading access to the fullest extent allowable by U.S. copyright law, computational access to the entire corpus for scholarly research, and other emerging services based on the combined collection. Items that are still under copyright are generally not eligible to have the e-book made available to Smith's library users.
During an emergency, such as a pandemic, these e-books are available. Under Smith College Libraries' agreement with HathiTrust, we cannot lend a paper copy of books owned by Smith when a HathiTrust e-copy is available. HathiTrust is currently providing temporary emergency access to e-books under these policies. When this e-access ends, Smith users will regain access to print titles. At the current time, Smith's music scores are not accessible in HathiTrust and you can continue to borrow the paper version.
