The "standard source for quantitative indicators of American history." In addition to the data series, essays "provide a general guide to the data, the sources, and the historical trends that have been emphasized in the scholarly literature" and include helpful reference lists and tables. Coverage varies by data series, but in some cases provide documentation from the 18th century to 2000. Of special interest for the history of the land are:
