In this novel, a Japanese man brings back a family of "little people" (think the Borrowers) from English who can only consume milk. All is well until the war is seriously underway and the Japanese family can no longer get milk for their British guests.

This is the first volume in a set about a nation of "little people" who are very much like Ainu and the human who discovers them.
